CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI, LIVRES

Depuis 1969, Christian Boltanski a publié plus de 80 livres d’artiste, activité pensée comme partie intégrante de sa démarche et support idéal pour son exploration inlassable de la mémoire. Leur évolution conceptuelle épouse la démarche de l’artiste, et peuvent se regrouper sous différents thèmes : les reconstitutions pseudo-autobiographiques d’enfance, les inventaires et les listes témoignant de la vie d’inconnus, l’obsession de la mort, l’impossibilité de distinguer les victimes et les bourreaux. Il existe à ce jour deux catalogues raisonnés de cet important ensemble : l’un publié en 1993 par Walther Koenig sous la direction de Jennifer Flay, et le second en 2007 par Bob Calle en collaboration avec l’artiste. A partir du fonds accumulé depuis sa création, la librairie Florence Loewy propose une reconstitution chronologique et non-exhaustive de ce parcours, essentiel à la compréhension de l’œuvre de Christian Boltanski.

 

CHRISTIAN BOLTANSKI, BOOKS

Since 1969, Christian Boltanski has published more than 80 artist books, an occupation conceived as integral part of his artistic practice, and the perfect medium for his relentless investigation of memory. Their conceptual evolution takes on the artist’s approach, and are usually divided in different obsessional issues: the pseudo autobiographical reconstitutions of childhood, the inventories and lists testifying to the life of anonymous, the obsession of death, the impossibility to distinguish victims from tormentors. So far, two catalogues raisonnés are dedicated to Christian Boltanski’s artist' books, an essential aspect of his work : the first one, published in 1993 by Walther Koenig and edited by Jennifer Flay, and the second one edited in 2007 by Bob Calle in collaboration with the artist. In its gallery space, Florence Loewy bookstore will show a chronological and non-exhaustive reconstitution of this artistic journey, critical to the understanding of Boltanski’s oeuvre.
