Specific information est un titre extrait de l’indication « All the necessary specific information is contained in the work itself » présente dans la publication July, August, September 1969 de Seth Siegelaub, regroupant les œuvres d’une dizaine d’artistes conceptuels. Cette note désigne celles dont l’énoncé contient toutes les informations nécessaires à leur lecture/compréhension.
Pour cette nouvelle exposition, nous avons fait le choix de sélectionner des livres d’artistes contenant uniquement du texte. Des publications dont l’image, la forme illustrée ou la photographie, sont absentes. Poésie, poésie concrète, collection de proverbes, mots-images et écrits littéraires, sont ainsi diverses formes se limitant au texte, contenues dans les livres et les multiples sélectionnés.
Le mot et la lettre sont les premiers habitants du livre. S’ils peuvent à la fois faire image par leur agencement dans l’espace de la page, et être révélateur de sens, le livre lui, devient le support de cette manifestation du texte. À travers des livres et multiples de Martine Aballéa, stanley brouwn, Jenny Holzer, Richard Kostelanetz, Annette Messager, et bien d’autres, la fonction du texte varie entre un intérêt pour sa forme même et la transmission de son énoncé.
Specific information is a title extracted from the indication « All the necessary specific information is contained in the work itself » present in the publication July, August, September 1969 by Seth Siegelaub, gathering the works of about ten conceptual artists. This note designates those whose statement contains all the information necessary for their reading/understanding.
For this new exhibition, we have chosen to select artists’ books containing only text. Publications from which the image, the illustrated form or the photography, are absent. Poetry, concrete poetry, collection of proverbs, word as picture and literature, are some of the text-only forms contained in the selected books and multiples.
The word and the letter are the first inhabitants of the book. If they can both make an image by their arrangement in the space of the page, and be a source of meaning, the book itself becomes the medium of this manifestation of the text. Through books and multiples by Martine Aballéa, Stanley Brouwn, Jenny Holzer, Richard Kostelanetz, Annette Messager, and many more, the function of the text varies between an interest in its form and the transmission of its statement.
