Dutch Landscape est un projet sur lequel José Quintanar travaille depuis son installation aux Pays-Bas en 2016. Thème historique majeur, le paysage était perçu comme une réalité fictive par les peintres hollandais de l’Âge d’or. Plutôt que de représenter ce qu’ils voyaient, ils cherchaient à créer une illusion du réel. Ce projet partage le même concept initial : il ne s’agit pas de représenter la nature, mais d’explorer la nature de la représentation. En d’autres termes, il s’agit de savoir quand la représentation du paysage se transforme en un autre paysage. Son processus de construction est identique à celui d’un dessin, élément par élément, en suivant son propre ensemble de lois et de règles. Le dessin d’un paysage, comme une prothèse, est structuré à l’intérieur d’un livre. Un livre qui devient un paysage – une image fantôme que l’on ne voit pas mais qui est bien présente.
À l’occasion de son exposition chez Florence Loewy, José Quintanar présente pour la première fois Dutch Landscape 17, son plus récent projet, parmi une série de livres de cette série. Dutch Landscape 17 est un livre qui ne consomme pas de papier, mais parasite les livres existants. Un « Dutch Landscape » et un dessin de ce paysage. Un paysage de 78 lignes, disposé et placé à l’intérieur d’un livre de 12 pages, chacune contenant 1 à 12 lignes. Un livre comme paysage dessiné à la main à l’intérieur d’un autre livre. Un paysage dans un paysage. 78 livres trouvés sur les marchés aux puces de Rotterdam, Amsterdam et La Haye tout au long de l’année 2023. Livres de cuisine, livres pour enfants, livres d’architecture, livres d’art, livres d’archéologie, manuels, littérature, atlas ou catalogues commerciaux. Une bibliothèque de livres qui n’ont jamais été réunis auparavant et qui définissent d’une certaine manière le paysage culturel et social d’un territoire.
José Quintanar (Madrid, Espagne, 1984) est un artiste issu de la bande dessinée et de l’architecture, il vit et travaille à Rotterdam, aux Pays-Bas. Utilisant le livre comme principal support de son travail, José Quintanar explore les possibilités du dessin comme jeu et la manière dont il sert de méthode principale pour établir des processus basés sur des règles rudimentaires. En 2013, il fonde le projet d’édition RUJA PRESS, afin d’explorer et d’expérimenter avec la forme du livre. En 2022, le projet a été rebaptisé « This was a project but we have forgotten what it was [C’était un projet, mais nous avons oublié ce que c’était] ». Il est actuellement doctorant à l’Universitad Politécnica Madrid avec une thèse intitulée « The book as public space [Le livre comme espace public] ».
Dutch Landscape is an artistic and research project José Quintanar have been working on since he moved to Netherlands in 2016. As a major historical theme, the landscape was perceived as a fictional reality by Dutch Golden Age painters. Instead of depicting what they saw, their interest lay in creating an illusion. This project shares the same initial concept: it’s not about representing nature, but exploring the nature of representation. In other words, it is about when the representation of the landscape transforms into another landscape. It shares the same process of how a drawing is constructed, element by element, following its own set of laws and rules. The drawing of a landscape, like a prosthesis, is structured within a book. A book that becomes a landscape – a phantom image that you can’t see but is present.
On the occasion of his show at Florence Loewy, José Quintanar presents for the first time his latest project, Dutch Landscape 17, among a range of books in this series. Dutch Landscape 17 is a book that doesn’t consume paper, but parasites existing books. A dutch landscape and a drawing of it. A landscape of 78 lines, arranged and placed inside a book of 12 pages, from 1 to 12 lines. A book as a landscape drawn by hand inside another book. A landscape within a landscape. 78 books found at second-hand markets in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and The Hague throughout 2023. Cookery books, children’s books, architecture books, art books, archaeology books, manuals, literature, atlases, or commercial catalogues. A library of books that have never been brought together before, which in some way define the cultural and social landscape of a territory.
José Quintanar (Madrid, Spain, 1984) lives and works in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is an artist with a background in comics and architecture. Using the book as the main medium for his work, José Quintanar explores the possibilities of drawing as a game, and the ways in which it serves as a primary method for establishing processes based on rudimentary rules. In 2013 he founded a publishing project, RUJA PRESS, to explore and experiment with the form of the book. In 2022 the project was renamed to « This was a project but we have forgotten what it was ».
He is currently a PhD candidate at the UNIVERSIDAD POLITÉCNICA MADRID with a thesis entitled « The book as public space ».
