With “Fountain – 1917” Saâdane Afif interrogates what lies behind the title and the date characterising the famous readymade of Marcel Duchamp, Fountain – 1917. In the summer of 2016 Afif, having worked for several years on his project The Fountain Archives*, started to collect postcards that picture a fountain and were written and sent in 1917. Depicting the quotidian of society and its public spaces, this collection of 232 documents illuminates the surrounding circumstances of Duchamp’s readymade. It offers a unique and compelling viewpoint onto a loaded historical moment, when war is still raging across Europe. This book reproduces in facsimile the complete collection of postcards assembled by Saâdane Afif. The foreword is written by the artist Tacita Dean. |

The Fountain Archives began as a playful pursuit of printed reproductions of Marcel Duchamp’s Fountain, a quest that, over time, evolved into an obsession. Saâdane Afif collects exhibition catalogues and books containing depictions of this iconic work, which feeds his reflection on the role of motives in art and his questioning attitude towards reproduction and representation.

Affiches is the first monograph focusing exclusively on Saâdane Afif’s posters. Limited-edition posters are an integral part of Afif’s practice. Produced on the occasion of an exhibition / performance, each design lists the title and date of the related project, as well as the names of any additional collaborators. Serving as both an announcement and an archival document, the posters form a visual record of the evolution of Afif’s work.
